Stray is a puzzle simulation game that was announced in 2015. The concept is simple: as a cat, you explore a cyber city full of humanoid robots, solving puzzles and helping locals along the way. Developed by BlueSky Studios and published by Annapurna Interactive, the game is expected to release in 2022, originally 2021.
The game has a great focus on atmosphere and art. The city in which the game takes place was aesthetically influenced by Kowloon Walled City. The gaming experience was inspired by the cats of BlueTwelve Studio founders Murtaugh and Riggs.
A new trailer showing more footage of the game has been shown in the Annapurna Interactive Showcase stream, revealing many new details about the game.
In Stray, you play as a cat who has fallen into a mysterious and forgotten city. Separated from his family and injured, he will have to explore and survive in this unwelcoming environment. From the cat’s unique point of view, players must navigate through the dangers of this hostile place and use the cat’s abilities to solve puzzles and uncover mysteries along the way.
The trailer shows what some of the puzzles are like, blending into the environment. In one clip, we see the cat picking up a dollar from the trash on the streets to throw into a fan. The fan gets stuck, allowing the cat to get through it.
There are also interactive elements in the game to help with the immersion, such as drinking from a container in the house that is being used to collect a leak in the roof.
A Companion on Stray
On the way, you will come across a small drone called “B-12”. With the drone, you can interact with objects in the world that you could not otherwise as a cat.
The drone will also help you communicate with the inhabitants of the city. Together, they will work together to learn more about the secrets of this forgotten community of humanoid machines.
Throughout the game, there are many quirks and interactions that you can perform, suitable for a cat. For example, you can scratch on the couch, just like any other cat would.
Getting close to citizens will also make them react to you, like admiring the cute cat.
You will meet enemies along the way, which you must dodge. These enemies will cling to the cat, which can be shaken by pressing a button.
Later on, these same enemies can be dealt with with a device given to you by a scientist. The device will help you defend yourself against them.
The game was originally planned for release in 2021, but has since been pushed back to 2022. Stray will launch on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Steam.
