The Sims 4: How to Change Traits With and Without Cheats

Personality traits not only color people in real life, they also add character to your various Sims and affect the way the game unfolds. Unfortunately, choosing a Trait for your Sim is a fairly permanent decision without the ability to easily change it. However, this guide will explain how to change traits in The Sims 4, with and without cheats.

What are traits?

Traits make up The Sims 4 personality system, borrowing traits from The Sims 3 and aspirations from The Sims 2.

There are four types of traits that make up this system in the base game, including personality, bonus, death, and reward.

Personality Emotional, hobby, lifestyle, social and for young children.
Death Ghost
Cousin Animal affection, high metabolism, muser, cowardly, domestic, flavor essence, business savvy, quick learner, own ground, seductive, collector, sociable and enterprising.
Reward Aspiration Reward, Inherited, Toddler Skills Reward, Childhood Aspiration, Character Courage, Satisfaction Reward, Career Reward, Food Mastery, Mountaineer, Temporary, and Sage.

How many traits can each Sim have?

All adult Sims can possess up to three traits. Teenagers can only have two traits, children can have one, and young children can have one.

Traits have a direct impact on Sims’ behavior and emotions, greatly affecting the outcome of the event in play and expanding the narrative.

Why can’t Sims traits be changed?

Once you’ve gone through the process of creating a Sim and carefully selected their traits, they cannot be changed thereafter, at least not easily.

There is a way to change traits without cheating and an easier way by using cheats. Below we will cover both options that will allow you to get the most out of your game.

How to change traits in The Sims 4 (no cheats)

Change Traits with a Rehabilitation Potion

If you’ve come to the unfortunate conclusion that your character needs a trait change, then the only way to do it without cheating is by purchasing a recovery potion.

First of all, you must accumulate 5000 satisfaction points. These points can be earned by having your Sims do activities that they enjoy.

Quirks were automatically turned on before, however a patch for The Sims 4 turned them off. Navigate to game options> game> and select “show quirks” to reactivate it; whims will help you accumulate points.

Once you’ve accumulated 5000 Satisfaction Points, head over to the Rewards Store and exchange those points for a Rehabilitation Potion.

Once purchased, drink the potion. This will activate a pop-up screen, which will then allow you to select the traits you want to change for your Sim.
